
Why Replacement Orders Need More Than a Width and Length
A replacement dryer fabric has to run through one specific dryer position, over a defined roll path, with a particular seam, guide arrangement and sheet condition. Width and length are essential, but they are not enough to determine construction, permeability, material or finishing.
The fastest way to receive a comparable quotation is to send the supplier a clear operating baseline. It prevents an old fabric's problem from being copied into the next order and gives both teams a record for evaluating the new fabric after installation.
1. Identify the Exact Dryer Position
Record the dryer group number, upper or lower position, single- or double-tier run, paper side and machine side orientation, and the fabric's running direction. Also provide a simple roll-path sketch or clear photographs.

2. Confirm the Existing Fabric's Physical Identification
Before removing the fabric, photograph and record:

If a label is missing, do not guess the construction from appearance alone. Include photos of both sides, the seam and the fabric edge so the supplier can state what remains uncertain.
3. Send the Machine and Operating Baseline
The replacement proposal should be tied to the conditions that the fabric actually sees:
- paper grade, basis-weight range and furnish changes;
- machine speed and normal operating range;
- dryer position, cylinder arrangement and fabric run path;
- temperature, ventilation and contamination conditions recorded by the mill;
- guide system, tensioning arrangement and available travel;
- cleaning method, shower arrangement and cleaning chemistry used on that position.
Do not compare permeability values without their test method and pressure differential. A number only becomes useful when it is linked to the named fabric, its test conditions and the operating position.
4. Describe the Removal Reason, Not Only the Service Time
The removal reason often matters more than the number of running days. Ask operators to classify what they observed:

This is not a fault diagnosis by itself. It is the evidence a supplier needs to avoid treating every symptom as a fabric-design issue.
5. Check Dimensions and Seam Constraints Before Ordering
Confirm the dimensions from the mill's current records and from the removed fabric where practical. State how each value was measured. Include roll diameters, smallest clearance points, seam installation route and whether the fabric must be seamed on-machine.
For a pin seam, record pin material and diameter if known, loop damage, and any restrictions caused by doctors, ropes, guide rolls or stationary components. For endless installation, confirm the path is available and that machine shutdown procedures allow the required route.
6. Use the Current Fabric as a Baseline, Not an Automatic Template
Request the current data sheet when available: construction, permeability with test condition, caliper, mesh or yarn description, seam, material and edge treatment. Then compare that baseline with the observed result.
If the current fabric performed well except for a localized guide mark, changing permeability alone may not solve the issue. Conversely, copying an old model number without reviewing the grade, speed or conditioning changes can repeat an avoidable problem.
7. Build a Supplier-Ready Request Package
Send one package rather than scattered messages:
- completed machine and operating checklist;
- current fabric data sheet or label photos;
- roll-path sketch and dryer-position photos;
- measured dimensions, seam and installation constraints;
- removal reason, used-fabric photos and cleaning history;
- desired delivery date and any required quality or documentation format.
Ask each supplier to identify which inputs they used, which assumptions remain, and which specification changes they recommend. That makes proposals comparable and gives the mill a useful trial record.
